Abstract:
The article explores the problems of literary translation of the psychological
states of characters from the work “The Picture of Dorian Gray” by Oscar Wilde into the Kazakh
language. The authors analyze the difficulties faced by translators when transferring deep
psychological aspects and cultural context of a text into another language. As a result of
comparing the contexts of the original and the Kazakh version of the work, several deviations were
noticed, most of which can be recognized as inaccuracies due to the intermediary language. The
article presents the results of a social survey conducted among readers in order to identify their
perception and understanding of the translated version of the work. The results of the study help to
reveal the key difficulties in literary translation and offer recommendations for improving the
quality of translation of foreign literary works into the Kazakh language.
